Background to Gallery Shoshinkan
Gallery Shoshinkan is located in Matsushiro Machi in Nagano Prefecture. It is a National Registered Tangible Cultural Property Ko Minka of the Matsushiro style particular to the Shinshu Region. Matsushiro Machi was the castle town to the Sanada Clan and there are approximately 15 old samurai residences and farmhouses that are registered for their historic significance. Gallery Shoshinkan is the only one of these building which is open to the public as a gallery.
I was born and raised in this Ko Minka. The idea to turn it into a gallery was to have those who visit discover the space and sensibilities of traditional farmhouse architecture and enjoy current day arts and crafts shows I curate in this natural and historical setting.
